It’s win or bust for Taunton Town when they entertain Weston-super-Mare at Wordsworth Drive in the Vanarama National League South tomorrow evening (18th April), ko 7.45pm.
There will be no room for error for the Peacocks who will be looking to recover from yesterday evening’s defeat to Torquay United as they reach the end of a manic period in which they will have played 9 games in 23 days by 5.00pm on Saturday. The three points for the Gulls yesterday has lifted them to safety and with Dover Athletic, Havant & Waterlooville and Dartford already confirmed for the exit door, the one remaining relegation berth is going to go to either Hemel Hempstead Town, Eastbourne Borough or the Peacocks.
A Weston equaliser five minutes into stoppage time denied Eastbourne victory in their game last night, leaving the Sussex outfit four points ahead of Town in 20th place and level on 49 points with Hemel Hempstead in 19th. Both those teams have just the one game remaining so a Town victory tomorrow is non-negotiable in order to leave them a point adrift and take the battle into the final day of the season when another win would be needed over Hemel Hempstead to ensure safety. A defeat to Weston tomorrow though would spell the end of Town’s stay in the National League.
Since the Seagulls conclusively beat Taunton on Good Friday, they have won just the one game from five, with two draws and two defeats making up the tally. Despite that they occupy a respectable 14th position and could finish in the top half of the table if they win their last two matches and results elsewhere fall their way. The Peacocks though will have the bigger incentive to claim maximum points in a contest they cannot afford to lose.
Nat Jarvis faces a fitness test ahead of the game while Lloyd Irish replaces the suspended Dan Lavercombe in goal. Head of Football Rob Dray said:” We have two cup finals to rescue our season and remain in the National League. We were not at our best against Torquay, but we have to be tomorrow. The lads have battled hard over recent weeks but it’s now all about getting it right against Weston and then again on Saturday in one massive final effort.”
