The Peacocks got their second season in the Vanarama National League South off to a successful start with a 2-1 victory over Braintree Town at Wordsworth Drive this afternoon. The result was no more than Town deserved as they were the better side for long periods after they fought back from conceding a fluke early goal, debutant home keeper Dan Lavercombe’s poor clearance rebounding off incoming Braintree striker Nnamdi Nwachuku and flying back past him into an empty net.

Skipper Nick Grimes had his header cancelled out for offside before he found the net again four minutes into first half added time, getting on the end of an Ollie Chamberlain cross to bury a close range header for the equaliser. Substitute Ross Stearn who had only just come off the bench then scored what proved to be the winner after 73 minutes, driving home into the roof of the net after a Lloyd James free kick had pinged around the box.
