The Peacocks have left themselves a mountain to climb to escape relegation from the Vanarama National League South after losing 2-1 to Torquay United at Wordsworth Drive this evening. A poor first half performance from Town saw them trail at the break, with the visitors taking the lead after 17 minutes when Tom Lapslie set up Brett McGavin to fire home from 20 yards. A McGavin corner was then volleyed home by Asa Hall on 29 minutes to double the Gulls’ lead before the hosts reduced the deficit two minutes into the second half when Zac Bell’s long throw was flicked out to Ollie Chamberlain who rifled home a scorcher from the left side of the area. The Peacocks went on to make a better fist of it and came close when Zac Bell’s shot hit the post and Evander Grubb put the rebound wide but there was to be no equaliser. Town now face the stark reality of having to beat Weston-super-Mare in their penultimate home game of the season on Thursday evening to give themselves a chance of staying in the National League.
