The Peacocks look forward to their first home game of 2024 in the Vanarama National League South tomorrow evening (9th January) when they welcome Somerset rivals Yeovil Town, ko 7.45pm.
The sides go into the big local derby having experienced differing fortunes at the weekend. The Glovers stretched their lead at the summit to ten points with a 2-0 victory at Huish Park against Bath City to preserve their unbeaten home record this season whilst the Peacocks dipped to a 3-0 defeat at Slough, a result which means a return of only seven points from their last 11 league outings. That loss kept Town in 19th position, but they have played the fewest fixtures in the division so have scope to climb well away from the relegation zone with their games in hand. That only works if you win those games though, and the Peacocks face a stern challenge in the shape of a Yeovil outfit whose weekend win made it six games unbeaten, and their 14th success from 19 league matches. Taunton will gain confidence from their impressive home form which has seen them lose only once in ten league games as they look to upset the odds and give the home fans in a near-capacity crowd a new year boost.
Since the reverse fixture on Boxing Day which the Glovers won easily by a 4-1 margin, Dylan Morgan has switched camps and moved along the A303 with the former Peacocks’ midfielder making his Yeovil debut off the bench on Saturday. The home side meanwhile name the same squad from Saturday with the added inclusion of two new loan signings dependent on paperwork being processed tomorrow. Head of Football Rob Dray commented:” We have to be better in both 18 yard boxes and that was a lesson for some of our young players on Saturday. We know what Yeovil possess, they are strong all over the pitch and are top of the league for a reason. However we will set up accordingly and give the big crowd a performance of grit and effort.”
