A nail-biting final week of the Vanarama National League South season begins for the Peacocks with the visit of Torquay United to Wordsworth Drive tomorrow evening (16th April), ko 7.45pm.
Town face three games in the next five days which will determine whether they remain at Step 2 next season or return to the Southern League Premier. Saturday’s crucial win at Farnborough has given them a fighting chance to escape from the bottom four and a win over Torquay tomorrow evening would see them swap places with the Gulls and even potentially climb up one further place depending on the outcome of Eastbourne Borough’s match at Weston-super-Mare.
Prospects could look decidedly rosier then come 10.00pm tomorrow but the Peacocks will have to forget about the ifs, buts and maybes and concentrate on the job in hand against the Devonians who only find themselves this low in the table after having had 10 points deducted for entering administration plus a further point for fielding an ineligible player. Town will be looking to follow up winning their first league double of the season on Saturday with another after having beaten the Gulls 3-0 at Plainmoor last month. In their seven games played since then, Torquay have won two and lost four and this patchy form has not helped them compensate for their points deduction as they seek to maintain National League status.
The Peacocks name an unchanged squad from the weekend, with Head of Football Rob Dray saying:” Tomorrow is a massive game, and we need our supporters to be the cliched 12th man. We’ve given ourselves a chance in the final week of the season after a very difficult year for the club, but the lads are fighting hard. We realise playing a club like Torquay makes us massive underdogs, but we’ve been here before…”
This is a vital week for the club so we would appreciate as much support as possible from the football fans of Taunton! Buy your ticket online and help us get those points to stay up!
