Saturday saw a thrilling encounter at The Cygnet Health Care Stadium that showcased just how far this new look Taunton squad have come in a short space of time.
Reece Smith’s first-half strike was not enough for the Magpies as Taunton returned to the pitch after the break with renewed energy and a second half that saw them grow into the game with determination, resilience and belief.
A newly formed team, guided by a new management team have brought an exciting new spirit and optimism that saw the Peacocks defy the odds by securing a hard-fought draw. The result gives the team and fans a chance to dream again, for a challenging rematch and a trip to York Road under the floodlights with hopes of achieving an even greater upset.
Taunton manager Richard Luffman is likely to name an unchanged squad ahead of the match in Berkshire. He shared his thoughts with our media team ahead of the match:
“We feel that Saturday was a really good performance, but we’re expecting Maidenhead to be even better. We’re going to have to up our levels. Nothing changes our end. We finished the game strongly, so we will look to use that momentum into the replay.
We are excited to see the First Round Draw, but we’re not getting carried away. It’s a huge opportunity as a League One side lie in wait, managed by Rob Elliot. He is an ex Premier League goalkeeper for Newcastle United F.C, who has a host of experienced league players at his disposal.
It would be a fantastic occasion for the town if we got through, but we’ve got full focus on the game ahead. We know that we have a very small chance, but while there is a chance we will give it absolutely everything and see where that takes us”.
