The Peacocks were unable to build on their successful Saturday when they went down to a disappointing 4-2 BetVictor Southern League defeat at Merthyr Town this evening (11th February).
A delayed kick-off due to floodlight problems did not seem to worry Town who were ahead after just two minutes when Ollie Chamberlain scored with a neat shot from the edge of the box. Merthyr responded with a 15th minute equaliser through Eliot Richards who slotted home after a loose ball was not cleared and the same player then doubled the home side’s lead after 34 minutes, curling home a 20 yard shot after Town had failed to clear their lines. The Peacocks were left with a mountain to climb when Lee Lucas set up Ian Traylor to volley home Merthyr’s third five minutes into the second half before Richards completed his hat trick on the hour, converting Traylor’s shot after yet more poor defending. Chamberlain reduced the arrears on 79 minutes with a left foot drive from 10 yards from a Lewis Hall cross, but it was too little too late for the Peacocks who now slip back to fifth after Swindon Supermarine’s win at leaders Chesham United.
