The Peacocks claimed their biggest win of the season when they demolished Slimbridge 9-0 at the Viridor Stadium yesterday evening (24th April) and in the process racked up their 33rd Evo-Stik League game unbeaten.
It was a fitting end to Town’s home campaign as they reached both 100 points and goals in their championship season. Before Town went ahead, it was the visitors who came closest to scoring, with Marley Thomas hitting the post and Lloyd Irish saving well from Jamie Martin. The opening goal came after 25 minutes, Jack Twyman turning Joel Randall’s cross into his own net, before a penalty was awarded five minutes later after a push on Matt Wright. Dan Sullivan’s spot kick was saved by Ollie Hall but the Town striker reacted quickly to net the rebound to make it 2-0. Hall could only help Randall’s shot into the net for Town’s third on 41 minutes and it was game over a minute before the break when Wright headed in after Sullivan’s header had hit the bar. There was no respite for the Swans when play resumed. Shane White headed home Ryan Brett’s corner two minutes in and on 49 minutes Ben Adelsbury rifled home a 25 yard free kick for Town’s sixth which became seven five minutes later when Wright nodded in White’s cross. The match quietened down although Town still had chances but had to wait until the 81st minute to score again, Sullivan blasting home a fine finish from just inside the area and Wright rounded things off two minutes from time when he won the race for the ball to lob over Hall to notch his second hat trick in a week. Town now focus on their final league fixture of the season at Cinderford on Saturday.
Reaction | Manager Leigh Robinson commented: “It was great to sign off the season at home with a hefty win and plenty of goals on the board too. Hopefully the supporters enjoyed that. Once again, in what was essentially a dead rubber, the hunger of our players to do their best and score goals was brilliant to see. We have literally lost no intensity since winning the league and this bodes really well for next season as it shows a strong winning mentality.”
