The Peacocks kick off the final four weeks of the Vanarama National League South season with a crucial home game against high-flying Chelmsford City tomorrow afternoon (23rd March), ko 3.00pm.
After ending their long run without a win a fortnight ago with victory at Worthing, Town followed that result up with another three points at Torquay United but their last two games have seen them lose to relegation-threatened Eastbourne Borough and then concede a stoppage time goal in midweek which saw Chippenham return home with the spoils. With another home game on the horizon against Slough Town on Monday evening, the Peacocks will be focused on maximising that advantage as they seek to earn sufficient points to help them rise up from 20th spot to ensure safety and another season in the National League.
Chelmsford though will be a tough proposition, currently sitting in second spot seven points behind leaders Yeovil Town and looking nailed on for at least a place in the play-offs. However, since winning four successive games in January, their form has been variable with three wins, two defeats and a draw from their last six matches. Last Saturday’s 3-1 league victory over Bath City was followed by a 3-0 win at Heybridge Swifts in a midweek cup game so their squad, which includes recent England C call-up Luke Jenkins, will make the long trip in confident mood aiming to increase their tally of away victories on the road which currently stands at 12, the highest in the division.
Lloyd James returns to the Peacocks’ squad after missing the Chippenham game, with Head of Football Rob Dray saying:” We have full focus on Chelmsford. We got a great point away from home earlier in the season but they are second for a reason. We are at home though and we’ve always liked upsetting sides and this gives us a chance to do that tomorrow.”
It promises to be a busy day at Wordsworth Drive as apart from the 90 minute main event, there is also an Eggstravaganza of Easter Fun happening off the pitch including live music from two separate performers, Football Fun Factory inflatables to challenge everyone in the family, a petting farm with a range of animals to say hello to, and a FREE Easter treat for the first 100 children through the turnstiles! Our usual food and drink vendors will also be in attendance with their own special offers while the England v Brazil game is being screened in the clubhouse after the game at 7.00pm. Tomorrow is also Non-League Day, an annual initiative which began in 2010 and which was set up to spotlight non-league football, the hard work club volunteers do and the integral value of local clubs to their communities. Prostate Cancer UK will also celebrate 10 years working with Non-League Day tomorrow, raising money to fund lifesaving research and to increase the knowledge and awareness of prostate cancer – the most common cancer in men.
