The Peacocks rued a host of missed opportunities and had to settle for a point at Cuthbury yesterday afternoon (26 Jan).
Town struck the woodwork through Ed Palmer on 15 minutes and Rocky Neal fired over from close range as the ball fell kindly following Ryan Brett’s corner 4 minutes from the break which saw the sides head back to the changing rooms level.
Wimborne found themselves ahead against the run of play as Tobias Holmes ran through and coolly slotted past Lloyd Irish on 72 minutes. Just 5 minutes later Taunton were level as Ollie Chamberlain’s guided header found the bottom corner from Matt Buse’s cross.
The Peacocks continued to press for the winner in the final quarter of an hour but on numerous occasions were thwarted by the hosts keeper. Taunton headed back to Somerset with their lead at the top of the table cut to 4 points by Met Police who have two games in hand.
A frustrated Rob Dray commented, “In the end a frustrating draw that saw their keeper make a save he knew nothing about and a ref who was inept and spoilt the game when it was already difficult with the conditions. However, it has to be said they are a tough team to beat at home and it shows where we are if we are disappointed with a point. Now we must dust ourselves off as we have another stern test at Salisbury on Tuesday night.”
