The Peacocks produced an excellent performance to secure a 2-0 victory at Basingstoke Town in the Southern League Premier South this afternoon.
After the home side had hit the post through George Reid inside the first minute, Taunton found their footing and hit the woodwork themselves when Jack Matthews header struck the upright. The visitors made the breakthrough after 36 minutes, Tom Smith’s effort being cleared off the line and Jay Malshanskyj tucked home the loose ball.
Basingstoke were reduced to ten men eight minutes into the second half after Sam Deadfield received a second yellow card before the Peacocks had a golden chance to double their lead ten minutes later when Alfie Moulden was brought down in the box by Curtis Angell. However Smith’s penalty was saved by home keeper Simon Grant. Undeterred, Smith atoned for his miss by slotting home from inside the box after 82 minutes to confirm victory for Town and inflict Basingstoke’s first league defeat of the season.
