We are delighted to welcome Opi Edwards to the club. The versatile 25 year old has initially joined on a short term deal and is in the squad for tomorrow’s Emirates FA Cup tie against Amersham Town.
The Ghana-born player who can operate in a variety of positions including right wingback, wide midfield or as a No 10 has accumulated plenty of higher-level experience during his career, beginning at Bristol City where he made his first team debut at Watford in the FA Cup during the 2017-18 season (as pictured) and made four senior appearances in total for City, as well as having loan spells at Bath City, Torquay United and Solihull Moors. Following his departure from Ashton Gate in May 2021 he joined Forest Green Rovers but unable to break into the first team he spent time on loan at Torquay again before moving to the USA to play for Rochester New York FC. Upon his return to England he has featured for both Bath City and Weston-super-Mare whom he left at the end of last season after spending the final weeks of the campaign on loan at Sholing.
Town manager Richard Luffman commented: “Opi has always played at Step 2 and above, but the last 12 months or so haven’t probably gone as well as he would have hoped, having had a few injuries which have interrupted his time at Bath and Weston. However, he’s got himself fully fit now and trained with us on Thursday so it was a good opportunity for us to add another bit of quality into the squad ahead of tomorrow with us missing Jay, Jayden and Archie and for the next couple of weeks as well with the FA Trophy and another possible FA Cup game when we would be a little bit light. He can play in multiple positions so it gives us a bit of flexibility with the squad as well which is important and we’re looking forward to seeing what he can do.”
