Match Report
Taunton Town 1-4 Wimborne Town
On a very wet, stormy day, The Peacocks bowed out of The FA TROPHY to fellow Southern League Premier Side, Wimborne Town.
With terrible weather conditions, credit goes to the grounds team for getting the game on.
In an absolute downpour, it took both sides a while to adapt to the conditions, and it was Wimborne who got the luck of being awarded a very soft penalty on 15 minutes. One of the many decisions that proved questionable by the referee throughout the match. The penalty slotted home Joe Smith.
Just before the interval, Wimborne extended their lead on 40 mins after a deflected shot from Max Bustamante put, The Magpies 2-0 up. Gary Johnson was shown a yellow card shortly after, after arguing with the man in black for the fouls missed as well as other things during the 1st period.
Wimborne could of put the game out of sight, but thanks to a very muddy 6 yard box, Smith was denied his second of the game after rounding Godden and sending the ball goalwards, it looked destined for the back of the net only for the ball to come to stop before crossing the line.
As the second half started, assistant Lloyd Irish was also being noted down in the referees notebook.
Just before the hour mark on 56 minutes, Max Davies scored his 3rd goal in 3 matches. The comeback might be on, was the thought of the Peacocks fans, with their side attacking The Carly Press Stand in the 2nd half.
But just as soon as that hope was raised, it was dashed two minutes later with Wimborne restoring their two goal advantage. A brilliant defence splitting pass from Bustamante fell to Smith who finally got his brace of the game.
Hope was then restored, or so we thought. A free kick was floated into the box and volleyed home by Scott Robinson at the far post to the delight of the Peacocks faithful, but the officials saw something that many of the crowd didn’t and the goal was ruled out for offside. Perhaps the rain had got in their eyes.
Taunton were now throwing everything at the Cameron Pain, the Wimborne keeper, who pulled off some 1st class saves and tipping the ball over the bar and out on numerous attacks on goal.
A major point on 80 minutes, when Jay Murray was brought down when through on goal, a clear sending off, but again, not according to the ref, who deemed that the defender wasn’t last man and only a yellow was produced.
A second penalty of the game, the second for the visitors, was awarded on 85 minutes. Max Davies picking up a yellow card in the process. Freddie Godden was then given a straight red card for reacting to something apparently said by the official to him, leaving Town down to 10 men, and Lloyd Irish coming out of retirement once again to don the gloves. The penalty however was struck on to the bar with Tughill unable to convert.
A third penalty, this time for Taunton. Max Davies was brought down in the box after making a decent run down the left. Jack Rice stepped up, but the effort ended up straight at keeper, Pain.
In injury time, Wimborne added a fourth with Cameron Munn slotting in from a tight angle.
A frustrating afternoon sees the Trophy run come to an end for this season. Town now look forward to the “Taunton Deane Derby” when we travel to face Bishops Lydeard in The Somerset Premier Cup.
