Match Report

Another impressive Peacocks performance saw them see off the challenge of a skilful Bristol City side who were made up of the club’s Under 23 squad with the addition of first teamer and ex-Bayer Leverkusen player Jens Hegeler.

A sunny evening and attractive opposition enticed a decent crowd of 538 to the Viridor and it was the full timers who were quickly out the blocks.  Shawn McCoulsky had an early shot pouched before City grabbed a sixth minute lead, Jake Andrews spraying a corner to Connor Evans just outside the box and his crisp strike gave Irish no chance.

Andrews then saw a free kick held by Irish and Evans shot over the top as the visitors took a grip on proceedings. Saikou Janneh wriggled along the byeline but saw his effort at the near post smothered before Town began to make inroads at the Invest Southwest End, Pierce Mitchell having a shot saved and Ben Adelsbury’s goalbound header being hacked clear by Cameron Pring. City again menaced at the end of the first half with Andrews curling an effort just wide and Janneh firing over but the second half belonged to the Peacocks.

After Josh Nelmes had directed a header over the bar, Matt Wright was put in by Ollie Chamberlain but Alhaji Sesay blocked and Matt Buse drilled the rebound wide of the target. A foul on Chamberlain then led to the Town equaliser two minutes past the hour, Ryan Brett planting a superb free kick into the net from around 25 yards. The Peacocks now had their tails up and took the lead seven minutes later, Dan Sullivan taking Mitchell’s pass to lift the ball over the top to Andrew Neal whose first time volley seared past Sesay.

Neal then made it nine goals from six pre-season outings on 75 minutes when he nodded in at the far post from Mitchell’s looping cross from the right after Craig Veal had forced an error from Sesay. A late flurry from City saw Evans fire into the side netting and a Nelmes’ back pass seized upon by Janneh but after rounding Irish he ran out of pitch and the chance had gone. Now onto the serious stuff!
