This result did no favours for either side as Taunton failed to secure the title and Basingstoke were relegated.
It took just four minutes for the Peacocks to create a good chances but from skipper Matt Wright’s pass top scorer Andrew Neal shot narrowly wide.
The hosts were battling for their survival and it was no surprise that they also went on the attack and Sam Deadfield shot just wide after 14 minutes but it was the visitors who drew first blood four minutes later after Neal was fouled by Ben Wright and got up to convert the penalty.
The lead could have been increased ten minutes before the break from Ed Palmer’s through ball but Neal’s lob went just over the bar.
Two further chances came and went in the first half – Neal had a shot tipped onto the post by home keeper Tony McGill and wright’s header was blocked on the line by Dean Stow.
It took only four minutes of the second half for Taunton to extend the lead when Dan Sullivan’s pass fell nicely for Ryan Brett who finished in style.
After 67 minutes Taunton keeper Lloyd Irish was brought unto action to save from Deadfield but the hosts were able to pull a goal back just a minute later when a cross by Sam Smart was expertly headed home by Ben Wright.
Chances were few and far between after this and the final whistle was blown with Taunton achieving their first win at the Camrose at the third attempt after two previous games in the 1970s. It will also be their last game at the ground as Basingstoke are moving to the Hampshire FA headquarters from next season.
