Match Report

A lovely summer’s evening at Langsford Park heralded the Peacocks’ return to action as they got their pre-season schedule off to a winning start.

Both sides looked lively early on, Matt Wright dragging a shot wide and former Lambs striker Josh Grant being denied by a last ditch tackle while at the other end Lloyd Irish claimed a Callum Burns cross at the second attempt. Tavistock keeper Josh Oak made the first real save of the game on the quarter hour, touching a Rocky Neal shot wide and when Shane White’s corner evaded the defence Ed Palmer was waiting at the far post to lash home the opening goal.

Palmer was close to adding almost a carbon copy second soon after from another White corner but this time his effort was blocked on the line before the Town defender drilled a 25 yard free kick narrowly wide. The Peacocks were keeping a good tempo going, with Neal clipping the ball over Oak for the second of the evening on 37 minutes after a strong run from Palmer had created the chance and just five minutes later Neal could hardly miss as he notched his brace from close range from Wright’s centre.

Soon after skewing an opportunity wide, Burns forced Irish into his only real albeit comfortable save of the half just before the interval. Dan Sullivan replaced Grant ten minutes into the second half and was soon involved, seeing his shot held and then firing over the top before the visitors made it 4-0 on 66 minutes, Neal scoring from the spot for his hat trick after Wright had been pulled down.

The Peacocks carried on creating chances as the light began to fade, Sullivan volleying inches wide and then having another cracking volley from a tight angle being parried out by Oak with Neal just unable to convert the rebound. Town’s top scorer from last season was involved in the final goal with eight minutes remaining, moving forward to find Noah Coppin in the box and he set up trialist Jack Rice to scoop the ball into the roof of the net. The home side still had moments, Irish saving from Tyler Elliott and Burns weaving in to shoot just wide while Sullivan’s bad luck in front of goal continued when his drive crashed off the bar. An impressive performance by the Peacocks for first time out against a Tavistock side who played some good football themselves.
