Taunton Town Results Match Review
Saturday 11 November 2017
Taunton Town v Beaconsfield Town
1 - 1

A lapse of concentration two minutes from the end cost the Peacocks dear in this Buildbase FA Trophy tie, meaning a long haul to Buckinghamshire for the replay on Monday evening. The result was especially frustrating given that Town were in control and rarely troubled until the visitors snatched a late equaliser to earn a second bite of the cherry.

Attacking the Invest Southwest End, the hosts applied all the early pressure, with Matt Wright heading narrowly over from a Pierce Mitchell cross and Town’s skipper then being blocked as he met Ollie Chamberlain’s centre. Despite initial momentum being with Town, the visitors came close to making the breakthrough when Andre Costa’s strike from out on the right struck the crossbar via the fingertips of Lloyd Irish. The Ram’s burly striker Alex Cathline then bore down on goal after a defensive slip but was beaten to the ball by a timely clearance from Irish.

After Ryan Brett had just failed to connect with Shane White’s free kick from the left, the Peacocks broke the stalemate on 28 minutes. Sullivan collected a loose ball down the left and jinked into the box, sidestepping Luke Neville before firing home past Jamie Norris. Sullivan netted again soon after but this time an offside flag was already raised as Town kept pressing, several corners coming to nothing while referee Barlow waved away appeals for what appeared to be a certain penalty after Chamberlain was knocked over by Michael Peacock.

Town’s solid defending meant that apart from Costa’s effort, Beaconsfield’s only other attempt on goal in the first half came from Aaron Minhas whose tepid shot was bread and butter for Irish. However there was a brief moment of concern when Peacock flicked a header wide from a Scott Cousins free kick when play resumed after the break.

The Peacocks continued to hold the upper hand as the second half progressed but were unable to translate their attacking possession into goals. Wright slotted just wide of the far post after an assist from Matt Buse who also worked hard to set up Sullivan whose cross agonisingly missed Chamberlain. Mitchell then fired a shot narrowly wide and Buse himself launched a header onto the roof of the net after Mitchell’s throw had been flicked on.

Omar Simpson replaced goalscorer Sullivan, who had taken a knock, with just under twenty minutes remaining and the substitute was soon involved, driving in a shot from 20 yards which glanced off the head of Peacock for a corner. For all their intent though Town could not unearth a second goal to make things more comfortable. Pulses were raised amongst the 476 crowd when Irish was booked after accidentally carrying the ball outside the box but Wes Daly’s free kick cannoned off the wall and Costa’s follow-up looped off a body for a corner.

With time ticking away Beaconsfield upped their efforts but any questions asked of Town’s defence were answered. That is until the 88th minute when Minhas lofted a pass over from the right to find Dan Brown unmarked and his first time volley evaded the clutches of Irish to find the corner to stun the Viridor faithful. There was still time for Town to nearly grab the winner, Brett’s free kick coming off Chris McGrath on the goalline and going over the bar. It wasn’t to be though as Town now have to regroup for another go at it at Holloways Park.
