Taunton Town v Swindon Supermarine
1 - 0

The Peacocks registered their sixth Evo-Stik League double of the campaign with a workmanlike win over play-off hopefuls Supermarine. There were limited chances for both sides during the 90 minutes but Matt Buse made sure he took his to secure victory and bring up an impressive 20 league games unbeaten for his club.

Matt Wright and Ollie Chamberlain were both back in the starting line-up after recent niggles while there was a first start for Exeter City loanee Joel Randall at left wingback. In front of the Viridor Stadium’s second highest crowd of the season to date, neither side gained the upper hand as the first half progressed. From Shane White’s free kick Ben Adelsbury planted a header straight at Josh Hill while a break from Randall down the left saw his centre netted by Chamberlain but the flag was raised to signify the ball had already gone out of play when the cross came in.

Both teams were guilty of some sloppy passes and wasting possession, with Supermarine seeing a good deal of the ball but failing to unduly worry their hosts. Brad Hooper tried to force the issue but was booked for diving inside the box before Lloyd Irish made his first stop, parrying a shot from Aaron Woodley. Town meanwhile, attacking the Invest Southwest End, struggled to click with their best effort coming on the half hour when Wright chested down Adelsbury’s long diagonal pass to Dan Sullivan but he hooked his left foot volley over the top. Pierce Mitchell then scuffed a shot to Hill after cutting in from the right while Wright headed Ryan Brett’s corner wide.

Supermarine’s best chance of a pretty lacklustre first half came just before the interval when Callum Parsons volleyed a Michael Hopkins’ cross the wrong side of the post. The stalemate was then nearly broken six minutes into the second half, with Brett threading a superb pass through to Chamberlain whose strike from eight yards crashed off the crossbar. This was the catalyst for the Peacocks to enjoy their best period of the match despite the retirement of Mitchell with a groin strain. Wright’s header from a Sullivan cross was held by Hill who then pulled off a terrific save, leaping to tip away a 30 yard Adelsbury free kick before it found the top corner.

The goal that settled the game arrived after 74 minutes, Wright taking a quick throw-in to Sullivan who found Buse arriving at the near post to squeeze in a shot between Hill and the upright. Wright’s cross was too far ahead of Craig Veal and then Sullivan cut inside but drove wide of the far post as Town looked to make the scoreline more comfortable.

Supermarine turned up the gas as time ticked away but couldn’t carve out a clear opportunity. Irish fumbled a shot from Callum Parsons but recovered to gather and also tipped over a free kick from out wide on the right from Hopkins but Town’s defence coped well with both the Marine pressure and the five minutes of added time to notch another vital three points.
