Taunton Town Results Match Review
Saturday 27 January 2018
Taunton Town v Didcot Town
3 - 1

The Peacocks racked up their fourth league double of the campaign with victory at a boggy Viridor Stadium. It was heavy going for both sides following persistent light rain during the morning which had saturated some areas of the pitch but due to the sterling efforts of the grounds team, the game went ahead and attracted another 400+ crowd.

With Brett Trowbridge injured, Ross Staley departed for Australia and Ben Palmer left for Bideford, the Town side showed yet another permutation at the back, with Shane White, on his return from suspension,  moving to left back and impressive debutant Keith Emmerson occupying one of the centre half berths.

The Railwaymen, on a run of only one defeat in twelve games, made the more positive start with Town slow to get going after another rain enforced period of inactivity. Felipe Barcelos swivelled to fire over the top and Sam Barder then sent a snapshot into the arms of Lloyd Irish but the hosts eventually shook off the rust and appeared to have taken the lead with their first real chance, Ollie Chamberlain stretching to get his leg on Toby Down’s cross to plant the ball against the inside of the post and seemingly over the line. However an assistant’s flag for offside curtailed the need to consult goalline technology.....

Barcelos was put clear at the other end and looked odds-on to open the scoring but took one touch too many and Ben Adelsbury swiped the ball away. The distinction of breaking the deadlock fell to Pierce Mitchell after 27 minutes, Town breaking with Dan Sullivan finding Chamberlain who in turn fed Mitchell on the right and he advanced into the box to drill a shot across Didcot keeper Leigh Bedwell into the far corner.

Peacocks skipper Matt Wright had another opportunity from the right side of the area but Bedwell blocked his rather tame effort before Town doubled their lead on 38 minutes, Sullivan flicking on to Chamberlain who showed fine skill to evade a defender and curl home past Bedwell from around twelve yards. Adam Learoyd then gifted the ball to Wright who picked out Sullivan on the right and his angled strike found the opposite corner of the net for Taunton's third two minutes before the interval.

Although the visitors played some tidy football, they rarely hurt Town where it mattered in the opening 45 minutes. Barder’s shot did deflect off Chamberlain into the side netting but they ended first half proceedings facing an uphill battle. When action resumed, an early spell of Peacocks’ pressure nearly resulted in number four when White and Wright were both inches away from connecting with Sullivan’s ball across goal. Town continued to probe, with Chamberlain driving wide and Mitchell’s strike whistling narrowly past the upright while Sullivan’s volley from Ryan Brett’s cross was fumbled and held by Bedwell.

Didcot were not without openings of their own. George Reid flashed an attempt across the face of goal and Irish was alert to block a close range effort from Barcelos. A lofted pass from Sam Elkins then released Barder who got to the ball before Irish to hook against the outside of the post. Matt Buse met Adelsbury’s cross but directed his shot straight at Bedwell before Didcot pulled one back eight minutes from time. Town’s defence did not heed a warning as moments earlier George Jeacock’s strike across goal had flown past the far post. Marlon Agyakwa’s cross from the left had better luck as Reid ran in to steer home at the near post.

Bottoms might have squeaked had Didcot reduced the deficit further but Elkins fired a free kick well over from the edge of the box and the same player headed wide in stoppage time as Town saw out the remainder of the game. Indeed they might have added a fourth close to the end when sub Les Afful who had replaced Sullivan earlier ran through but overran the ball and Bedwell was able to clear.
