Taunton Town v North Leigh
1 - 0

Taunton bounced back from their shock midweek thrashing by Yate, hanging on to an early goal to see off spirited North Leigh and open a three point gap at the top of the table.

Leigh Robinson’s men made the early running, winning a string of corners at the Invest Southwest End. From one, delivered from the left by Shane White, Matt Wright saw a powerful downward header brilliantly saved on the line by Manny Agboola. The home side made the breakthrough though just before the quarter hour mark when Ben Adelsbury confidently despatched a penalty high into the right-hand top corner after referee Daniel Flynn spotted a push on Wright as North Leigh defended another White flag kick.

Town thought they had a second in the 33rd minute. Agboola pushed an Adelsbury free kick into the path of Les Afful who gleefully rammed the ball home. However, the substitute, who had earlier replaced injured Ben Palmer, was flagged offside.

The sides traded chances until the interval. Lloyd Irish came off his line to deny dangerous North Leigh front runner George Seacole, and visiting captain Ryan Paddock headed over from a Sean Wood corner. At the other end, Ollie Chamberlain fired over after outpacing the away defence, then Afful hooked a shot wide. Taunton’s most eye-catching move of the half saw Wright and Chamberlain link up to release Omar Simpson down the left. The striker cut inside his marker and curled a shot just wide of the far post.

Ryan Brett headed against the underside of the crossbar from Ross Staley’s cross as Taunton continued to knock at the door in the second half. Staley, Chamberlain and Simpson were also just off target with efforts at the Town End whilst Deon Noel-Williams went close for North Leigh.

The closest the visitors came to achieving parity came 15 minutes from time when Afful spectacularly cleared a glanced header from substitute Harlie Price off the line. Moments later play switched to the other end and Taunton were handed a glorious chance to make the points safe. Agboola rushed off his line to clumsily clatter Simpson, and Adelsbury was given his second penalty opportunity of the afternoon. This time he skied his kick horribly, but Town already had just enough in the bank.
