Taunton Town v Yate Town
1 - 4

Few would have predicted beforehand such a conclusive defeat for the unbeaten Peacocks who were given a rude awakening by the previously winless visitors.  After Town had equalised a first half goal, it all fell apart as some awful defending was punished by a hardworking and clinical Yate side which belied their early season form.

Two changes were made from the Bishops Cleeve game, Arran Pugh coming back in to replace Ben Adelsbury who had a twinge and Les Afful swapping places with Ross Staley, and in the early exchanges it was Town who were well on top. Captain Matt Wright very nearly made a breakthrough after just five minutes but his near post header from Shane White’s corner smacked off the post. Pugh then nodded on White’s free kick to Afful whose attempted overhead kick passed wide before Omar Simpson fired over the bar after his initial close range shot had been kept out by Yate keeper Harvey Rivers.

Town’s dominant opening spell was abruptly derailed after 14 minutes when Yate scored with their first attack. A corner from Lewis Leigh-Gilchrist, one of three loanees from Bristol Rovers who had played in the pre-season friendly against Town back in July, was cleared and returned to him by Brad Abraham and when the second cross was whipped in Cameron Ebbutt was free in front of goal to pounce.

Brett Trowbridge fired a strike just over as the hosts tried to hit back but the goal seemed to have punctured Town’s momentum which took a further blow midway through the half when  Pierce Mitchell was subbed after suffering a twisted knee from a very dubious challenge minutes earlier. The remainder of the half became scrappy, with referee Roberts applying leniency to several apparent transgressions from the visitors. Town’s attacking also lost its punch as Staley rifled a free kick high and wide and a White cross was cleared onto the roof of his own net by a defender before Simpson drove a half volley across goal and wide of the far post, all of which meant Yate held the advantage at the break after taking their one chance.

Wright and Simpson both planted headers over the bar when the second half got underway while Lloyd Irish stretched to catch a Ben Brooks attempt when he connected with Leigh-Gilchrist’s diagonal pass. Rivers made a more telling save at the opposite end when an Ollie Chamberlain shot was blocked and fell for Wright to turn and fire in a close range effort which the Yate keeper parried, the ball spinning across goal and cleared. Town though eventually drew level on 62 minutes when Mark Preece, on his home debut, headed in at the back post from White’s corner.

Hopes of the equaliser providing the springboard to go on and add to their tally sadly proved off the mark with Yate retaking the lead only five minutes later. After Simpson had hooked wide from Ryan Brett’s corner, Yate profited from more defensive indecisiveness when Ebbutt stole in to steer home from close range following a cross from the right.

Town launched rescue act round two but couldn’t summon up the guile to unlock the visitors’ well-organised rearguard. Chamberlain saw a shot from the edge of the box deflected wide while Pugh drove narrowly over but it just wasn’t happening for the Peacocks in front of goal. With players pushing up, Yate should have capitalised on the counter when they broke, Trey Anderson putting Ebbutt through but with his hat trick beckoning he sliced horribly wide. That miss was soon forgotten though on 79 minutes when Brett’s terrible backpass from out on the left set up Ebbutt who ran clear to finish neatly into Irish’s far corner.

With the home side creating nothing of note in the final stages, Yate rubbed more salt in the wound with a fourth a minute from time as Ebbutt this time turned provider, chipping a ball over the Town defence into Leigh-Gilchrist who slanted home across Irish to inflict Town’s heaviest home reverse in the Evo-Stik League since Didcot left the Viridor Stadium with a 5-1 success in February 2013
