Taunton Town Results Match Review

Willand Rovers v Taunton Town
3 - 1

A depleted Town squad notched up their first win of pre-season against the Western League Premier Division side on a grey and blustery evening at Silver Street. The game proved a very decent work-out for a Peacocks team which fielded yet another different combination at the back and up top due to various players missing.

The visitors had an opportunity just a minute in but trialist Ryan Burrows swung and missed at a ball into the box. The hosts though had more attempts at goal in the opening quarter, with Luke Alden’s shot deflected wide and Lloyd Irish saving well from Brett Worbey’s free kick and a strike on the turn from Brad Ausden.

Town were displaying plenty of attacking intent and made the breakthrough after 27 minutes. Ollie Chamberlain burst through from midfield and when he was felled just outside the box, Ben Adelsbury stepped up to fire a great free kick over the wall and into Mike Searle’s left-hand corner. Willand then had a similar chance themselves, former Peacock Josh Searle’s free kick beating the wall but not Irish who held the ball cleanly. Yet another free kick after Les Afful was held back saw Mike Searle parry Ryan Brett’s effort but luckily for Willand the loose ball ran free between two Town players.

The single goal advantage was doubled three minutes after the break when Shane White’s corner from the left was met by Arran Pugh and although Josh Searle cleared the header off the line, the ball reached Afful who managed to chip over the head of a covering defender at the right post to find the net. Irish pulled off a superb double save soon after, denying another ex-Town man in James Blake after Glen Gould had put him through and then palming over Ausden’s close range volley after the ball had been returned into the area.

Ross Staley leaped to connect with an Adelsbury cross from the right to score Town’s third with a rare header on 54 minutes and further goals looked on the cards. Brett’s header went straight to Mike Searle while Pugh directed another header wide of the far post from Brett’s flag kick and Joe Charles who had replaced Afful seconds after the third goal had a rasping shot from the right angle of the six yard box pushed away by the Willand keeper.

Willand began to find more gaps in the latter stages and threatened on occasions, reducing the arrears on 76 minutes when Luke Mortimore converted a centre from the right. Josh Searle made another goalline clearance from Craig Duff’s header but Tom Stone’s follow-up was too high before Blake ran free at the other end, only to be thwarted by Irish again, as chances materialised up until the final whistle.
