PEACOCKS WIN PREMIER CUP!

Town ended their long season on a high with a well-deserved 4-2 victory over Weston-super-Mare in the Final of the Somerset Premier Cup at Bridgwater Town yesterday evening (5th May). The Peacocks scored all their goals in a one-sided first half and although the National League South side pulled two back after the break it was not enough to prevent Town from lifting the trophy. Owen Irish put the Peacocks in front on 13 minutes when he headed home a Shane White corner and the same combination doubled the lead six minutes later, another trademark Irish header beating Weston keeper Liam Kingston. Town kept up the pressure to make it 3-0 after 25 minutes when White's curling cross was cleared by Jordan Morris straight to Matt Buse who clinically slotted into the net from ten yards before Brad Ash headed a good chance over the top for Weston. Josh Searle came close for the Peacocks who struck number four two minutes from half time, Buse scoring his second of the night after a free kick hit his leg and allowed him to run clear, round Kingston and slide his finish into the opposite corner. An unmarked Owen Irish volleyed wide to pass up the opportunity of his hat trick before the Seagulls got on the scoresheet through Morris on 74 minutes, his angled shot squirming through the hands of Lloyd Irish to roll over the line. The goal pepped Weston up and after Rollin Menayese's close range effort had hit the bar, Jamie Laird notched a second with a header over Irish after he couldn't hold Danny Greenslade's free kick. Town though withstood further Weston pressure to claim the Somerset Premier Cup for the third time in four years. Reaction - manager Leigh Robinson remarked:" A good win and a nice way to finish off a memorable season with a trophy. The first half performance was excellent on a tricky pitch and meant we could sit back a bit in the second half. I was disappointed not to be able to get the young lads on for a run out at the end but Weston scored two quick goals and were throwing everything at us so I felt we needed all our experience, height and physicality on the pitch at that point but they contributed massively to winning this trophy in the previous rounds so all credit to them. Good to see the fans with smiles on faces after the game as we know they really like this cup. Thanks to everyone for all your support during this long and fantastic season and we look forward to seeing you in pre-season."
